There will be opportunities to visit places of work and to observe people working at many different occupations. Quarterly, the youth attend vocational seminars and are involved with trips into the community to observe different vocations in the workplace. Opportunities to work in the community will be available as the resident advances in this program. Typically, a youth who achieves Level 3 and higher can play sports at school, get a job or both, subject to case manager approval. One youth was discharged at age 18 with almost $2000 in savings he had earned in his job off campus and placed back for life after discharge. This is in addition to the Hope House Board Savings Plan to reward appropriate discharge.
The youth learn daily Independent Living skills at Hope House. Keeping track of the monies they earn both off campus and on, tracking their points daily in the behavioral point ledger, washing their own clothes and helping with meals are all skills they will need as adults. Currently one of the vocational projects is to pool the proceeds from the Hope House Victory Garden and purchase a flat screen television for all the youth to share in the house.
