The boys enjoyed starting a garden this June. They really jumped in and worked hard to create a big garden at Porters farm south of town. The youth learn some entomology, horticulture, land & water conservation, as well as other gardening skills.
This summer they grew sweet corn, watermelon, cantaloupe, green beans, and 4 different kinds of cucumbers, Indian corn, okra, pole beans, 3 kinds of zucchini, assorted squash, peppers, tomatoes, gourds and many different kinds of pumpkins. The boys favorite to watch grow of course, are the giant pumpkins! They hope to sell them at the local farmers market. Then they want to buy a flat screen TV with the proceeds! The local farmers market is held on Main Street every Friday Morning. The youth got a chance to put to use some of their social skills as well living skills. The community seems to really enjoy interacting and visiting with the youth.
